HULL UK CITY OF CULTURE 2017

HULL UK CITY OF CULTURE 2017

Following the bombings of World War II, major flooding and the loss of its fishing industry, Hull has suffered some of the highest levels of deprivation in the UK over the last century and as a result has been infamously referred to as “the worst place to live in Britain”. It’s estimated that being awarded the UK City of Culture 2017, is worth a staggering £60m to its economy whilst it puts the city firmly in the spotlight both nationally and internationally. THE CHALLENGE Design a poster campaign that will visually challenge people’s perceptions of Hull and inspire them to participate, visit or to simply find out more about the UK City of Culture.

These designs take inspiration from Armin Hofmann’s iconic poster, Giselle and are intended to combine elegance with a subtle sense of mystery.

The conductor’s hands beckon the viewer to look further into the image, and are designed to visually engage the audience and encourage an idea of looking beyond, whilst the ethereal dancers suggest movement, beauty and rhythm and are designed to visually challenge people’s preconceptions of Hull.
